John Lawson Death & Obituary: Plymouth Business Leader and Community Champion Remembered at 89

John Lawson Death & Obituary: A life defined by integrity, generosity, and unwavering service is one that continues to inspire long after it ends. John Lawson, a respected businessman, devoted family man, and dedicated community volunteer, passed away peacefully this week, shortly after celebrating his 89th birthday. His passing leaves a profound void for his family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he enriched.

Born in Elburton to Francis and Joan Lawson, John began his working life in horticulture, helping to run the family business, Dorey & Lawson, renowned for its Elburton tomatoes. Alongside his father, sister Blanche, and brother-in-law Jeremy Sayers, he built a strong foundation before entering the retail sector in 1971. For the next three decades, he led FTB Lawson Ltd, operating stores across Plymouth, Totnes, and Tavistock. His influence extended throughout the industry, serving as president of the British Hardware Federation and helping establish Home Hardware in North Devon to support independent retailers.

John’s commitment to serving others reached far beyond business. He was actively involved with Round Table, Plymouth Rotary, and chaired Fox House charity, supporting people experiencing homelessness in Plymouth. His honesty, kindness, and belief in lasting relationships earned him widespread admiration.

Married to Jennifer for 58 years, John shared both family life and business success with his wife while raising Susan, Liz, and Tom. He also found joy in classic cars, woodturning, and the arts.

A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at Yealmpton Community Methodist Church on August 8, 2026.

John Lawson’s legacy lives on through the businesses he strengthened, the community he faithfully served, and the family he loved so deeply. His life stands as a lasting example of compassion, integrity, and service.
